Special applications / Modular cabinets for safety in railway tunnels

With the aim of ensuring an adequate level of safety in railway tunnels, the law requires that a system be installed that, in the presence of an incident in a tunnel, allows the disconnection of the overhead contact line (an overhead system used to transmit electrical energy, even at a distance from the electrical generation points) and the related SIL4 safety earthing.

This system is known as STES (Electrical Traction Disconnection and Earthing System for Tunnel Safety) and allows the earthing of the entire tunnel to be controlled - remotely or via an on-site operating panel - to facilitate rescue operators in the necessary operations.

IRINOX designed and manufactured a series of highly customised modular cabinets to contain these systems and protect their operation.

Customising the cabinets

The stainless steel electrical enclosures provided for various customisations:

  • Multiple cable gland plates fixed to the bottom of the cabinet with custom-designed holes and support brackets for transformers.
  • Plate drilled and threaded to drawing ready to be wired at a later date.
  • Dedicated internal area in the top left-hand corner for mounting customer instrumentation.
  • Transparent lexan door to ensure visibility of the interior with closure and modular rack infill panels.
  • Installation of internal insulators to electrically isolate the outer shell from the internal wiring to protect maintenance personnel/operators from any electrical discharges.
  • Internal panelling to protect sensitive parts to prevent intentional or accidental intervention by unauthorised personnel when the door is opened.
  • Rainproof top fitted after moving the cabinet by means of galvanised iron lifting eyebolts.
  • Cable gland in the lower part.

Project pluses

IRINOX also carried out vibration and IP index tests to ensure maximum safety for the client.
