IECEx: the new certification that ensures safety and efficiency for IRINOX electrical enclosures

Safety in hazardous industrial environments cannot be left to chance.

That is why IRINOX has subjected some of its stainless steel electrical enclosure models to rigorous certification tests and obtained the prestigious IECEx recognition.

What does IECEx certification mean?

IECEx is an international standard that certifies the conformity of products intended for use in areas with explosive atmospheres, verifying their safety and reliability.certified electrical enclosures are designed to protect electrical, electronic or pneumatic components and ensure high resistance in critical environments.IRINOX certified products have obtained Ex eb IIC Gb, Ex tb IIIC Db classification, making them suitable for installation in:

  • Zone 1 and 21 (areas where the presence of flammable gas or dust is frequent)
  • Zone 2 and 22 (areas where the risk is occasional)

Which IRINOX products have obtained certification?

ADH

Hygienic terminal box design, developed for environments where cleanliness is essential, such as the food and pharmaceutical industries.

ADN

Robust and versatile terminal box, ideal for a variety of industrial applications.

EKO.HY

Hygiene-certified stainless steel enclosure, designed for environments with high safety and hygiene requirements.

What advantages does this certification offer to professionals in the sector?

  • Guaranteed safety: total protection for critical equipment in high-risk industrial environments.
  • Regulatory compliance: avoiding legal issues and ensuring compliance with European and international directives.
  • Operational reliability: materials highly resistant to corrosion, chemicals and mechanical stress, with a design that ensures tightness and hygiene.
  • Installation versatility: suitable for various environments, including chemical, petrochemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.

Differences between IECEx and ATEX in classification

In the IECEx system, a Gb/Db certified product corresponds to an ATEX 2GD device, while a Gc/Dc product would correspond to an ATEX 3GD device.

ATEX

European standard using equipment categories 1, 2 and 3 to distinguish the required level of protection:

  • 2GD → equipment intended for zones 1 and 21
  • 3GD → equipment intended for zones 2 and 22
IECEx

International standard that uses a classification based on ‘ProtectionConcepts’ and levels of protection, without referring to 2GD or 3GD.In the case of IRINOX electrical enclosures, the certification obtained is:

  • Ex eb IIC Gb (for gas)
  • Ex tb IIIC Db (for dust)

How do the IECEx classifications read?
  • "Ex ’ → Indicates that the product is certified for explosive atmospheres
  • "eb ’ → Increased safety protection (for gas)
  • "tb ’ → Protection for dust (sealed enclosure)
  • ‘IIC’ → Explosive gases (IIC is the most severe group, includes hydrogen and acetylene)
  • IIIC’ → Conductive dusts
  • Gb / Db’ → Protection level
  • "Gb ’ (for gas) → equivalent to ATEX Category 2G (use in Zone 1)
  • Db ’ (for dust) → equivalent to ATEX Category 2D (use in Zone 21)
